The Blood Center Nurse Role

Under the direction of the Blood Center Operations Director, the Nurse Medical Services Specialist is responsible for the execution of medical duties and adherence to quality standards.  Additionally, the Nurse Medical Services Specialist is responsible for the training of employees in the medical aspects of the collection, manufacturing, and distribution of blood and blood products.  Great opportunity for the nurse who wants to get on the ground floor with a great company. Nurse Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Contributes to organizational mission via professionalism and customer service
  • Collects, manufactures, and aids in the distribution of blood and blood products
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the established Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) and company Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), to ensure blood products meet safety, purity, and potency requirements
  • Complies with safety procedures, personnel practices, and confidentiality policies
  • Works independently to determine donor suitability following established protocols
  • Aids in the management of adverse events including providing aid to donors during the adverse event, completing the necessary documentation, and conducting proper follow-up
  • Reviews test results and takes appropriate action on positive viral marker reports
  • Conducts donor counseling regarding suitability as needed.
  • Executes clinical research under the direction of the Medical Director
  • Provides on-call medical coverage for assigned services
  • Participates in mandatory training, retraining, staff meetings, and continuing education
  • Performs data entry associated with component production, labeling, storage and shipping ensuring accurate and complete manufacturing records
  • Ensures suitability and accurate labeling of products for release and distribution
  • Conducts initial skills training, refresher training, and routine assessment of employees
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Nurse Required Education, Skills & Experience:

  • Current certification/licensure in Minnesota as a Licensed Practical Nurse, Licensed Vocation Nurse, or Registered Nurse
  • Ability to follow complex oral and written instructions
  • Demonstrated excellent customer service skills
  • CPR or ability to obtain
  • Ability to organize and prioritize
  • Demonstrated proficient computer skills including Microsoft Office and various web applications
